| Holy crap! A post!
A lot of school has passed and it's going OK. I like computer graphics a lot. I'll do a bigger post another time.
It's fall break, and I'm at home. On the bus ride home, someone told their parents that they were getting dropped off at "Sports Authority." We were getting dropped off at the NYC "Port Authority." I just found that extremely amusing.
| 9 days left of the internship. I have Friday off, so it's more like 8. Kind of weird that it's ending already. It's been fun, overall. My bosses like me, and I've been doing things that will actually be in the game. It'll be pretty cool to see my name in the credits of the game, and to see what I've done in action. Maybe I'll be able to work here after school.
I saw Talladega Nights the other day. It was pretty good. No Anchorman, though. Snakes on a Plane comes out on next Friday. That's gonna be awesome.
I beat Kingdom Hearts II, and then ICO. Kingdom Hearts II ended as expected: long, drawn out, and with a teaser of the sequel. ICO was fun. It had a very nice setting, but was short. I got God of War and Shadow of the Colossus for $30, so I've just started playing SotC. The camera is surprisingly not that good.
Well, I can't think of much more to say for now. School soon.
| Well well.
So I've been here for 7 weeks. Pretty crazy, eh? The housing situation has worked out pretty well, we have lots of nice furniture, a fireplace, and absolutely no use for it.
Working is not too bad, sometimes even fun. The best parts are when it feels rewarding - like when I realize that the thing I'm coding will show up in some form in the final game. Just being able to work with other employees is good; it's nice to feel like I'm contributing.
That said, the most disappointing thing about the internship is the social life. I'm not sure how it is for full-time workers, but the interns are pretty anti-social. I guess that's to be expected of a whole bunch of CS majors, though. It's not like the people are uber-nerds and have pocket protectors or anything; it's just that they often prefer video games to hanging out. I'll call people up or arrange to do something, but they just say that they'll stay at home and play video games or are tired of hanging out. Bah. I guess if I had a car and/or were over 21, there'd be a lot more social options open to me.
So I have some money now. Pretty sweet. I spend a lot on food/living expenses, but I guess that can't be helped. I'm just curious about the amount I spend on entertainment. I don't have a good grip on how much I'm making after taxes/food, so I'm not sure how much I should/shouldn't be spending. I got a DS Lite and 3 games, and I'm planning on getting a PS2 shortly. But, if you compare it to people who got XBox 360s and games, it's not so bad. I wouldn't get so many games if I hung out with people instead. Oh well, at least I'm beating stuff.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 came out last week! I had forgotten how awesome it is. Now, I'm no huge Johnny Depp fan - I'm just a pirates fan. Not realistic pirates, though. Supernatural, voodoo, as one review called them "loveable rogues". Think Monkey Island. Well, the first movie was pretty much The Secret of Monkey Island: The Movie, anyway. There are a few parallelisms in the sequel, but not as many as the first. Still awesome, though. Yarr!!!
Well...I can't think of much else to say now. I may eat lunch with my cousin today. Yeah.
| I considered a move to LA.
So I got here, and stayed the first night in a hotel, since we couldn't
move into the apartment yet. No problems there. The next
day, before work, we got to the apartment, and as we went to sign the
lease, we see the "unfurnished" checkbox checked. Crap. We
fixed that little error (of course involving us paying more money), but
they still couldn't get the furniture in until Thursday (this was
Tuesday). So two nights with no furniture. My generous
cousin lent us air mattresses, so it wasn't too bad (though we had a
few nights without a shower curtain). One thing down, a few more
to go.
They told us the furniture would come with a TV. That solves my
problems of having to ship my TV from home and having a mad small
TV. Unfortunately, it didn't come on Thursday. What did
come, was queen beds, lamps, dressers, tables, chairs, a couch, an
armchair, and a TV stand (and some generic paintings!). I thought
there was something fishy about a furniture place delevering a TV...But
when I asked, the girl in the office sent a fax to the furniture
company asking about the TV. Hopefully we will have it here by
tomorrow or Tuesday.
Then there's internet. You'd think that I'd have internet by
now. But I could just tell you that I'm at the office accessing
this from there. That would be a lie. What's nice about
salesmen is that they entice you with offers that are great in the
beginning, and then get expensive. Like cable and internet that's
really cheap for the first, say...three months. Hey, I'm only
going to be in LA for three months! Wow, what a
coincedence. That means I get free HBO and Showtime, too!
All mad cheap. They were supposed to come here this morning from
9-12. They showed up at 12:10. The internet's set up...but
no router. Yi said he got his parents to send his router here, so
we should get that...eventually.
So timelines:
TV...2 days
Gamecube...5 days
Router...? days
Once those are here, this place will be pretty kickass. I'll be
able to watch stuff from my laptop on the (hopefully bigger than 13")
TV. Maybe, if I'm crazy, I'll even invite people over.
The people at EA are pretty cool. It's a lax environment, but I
wish I knew more people. That'll probably come in time,
though. The interns are alright, but a little too much on the
CS-y personality side. I mean, I do like talking about games, but
not always. It'll take some time for a good social circle to
form, so until then, I'm kinda bouncing around seeing who wants to do
stuff and watching Sopranos alone. Hopefully I'll meet some
people that share some other interests with me.
Work has been pretty good so far. I can't say what I'm doing, but
I'm not sure how things will shape up for the summer. Hopefully
I'll enjoy it and won't dread going into work. But 8 hours is a
long time, especially if you don't get paid for your lunch break.
Well, I think that's it for now. I'll be back soon. Maybe.
